Why join AIS?, and Novelty Iris

Date: January 20, 2019 3:00 PM

Holy Cross Lutheran Church

11425 Marsh Lane

Dallas Texas

The American Iris Society (AIS) is the parent organization behind all the affiliated iris clubs in The USA and Canada.

It provides a wealth of information on all types of irises, the registry of all irises registered and introduced in North America, sets standards and requirements for training iris judges, oversees the AIS awards system, publishes a beautiful quarterly full color bulletin, and provided many other services for members and the affiliated clubs.

Come explore the AIS with us.

In addition, Bonnie Nichols, President of the Novelty Iris Society, a section of the AIS, will tell us all about those iris types that are not traditional - the Space Agers (with horns and flounces), Broken Colors (irregularly splattered with a 2nd color), Flatties (irises with no upright petals), and more.

Iris 101 - from Selection to Hybridizing

Date: February 17, 2019 3:00 pm

Holy Cross Lutheran Church

11425 Marsh Lane

Dallas Texas

With all the beautiful iris out there, how does one choose?  And after acquisition, what do you do with the rhizome? How do you plant it? How do you care for it?

Hooker Nichols, an award winning hybridizer and commercial garden owner, will take us through all the basics of iris ownership and care.

He will touch on where all the new iris cultivars come from, what those big green footballs that sometimes form after iris bloom are, what is involved in getting those new cultivars to market, and why they cost $50-%60 per rhizome.

 Bring any questions you have.
